Hungarian exceptive phrases: a pilot study

his talk concerns exceptive constructions in Hungarian — constructions that express exclusion: [Lászlót kivéve] mindenki táncolt. While Hungarian grammar is thoroughly described overall, there is surprisingly very little information on exceptive markers beyond their brief mentioning and a couple of examples in reference grammars. In this study, I investigate the basic properties of Hungarian exceptive constructions relevant for comparative syntax. First, I will discuss the categories that exceptive markers belong to. Second, I will focus on the discussion of the distinction between free vs. connected exceptives, as well as phrasal vs. clausal exceptives introduced by the same marker kivéve. Finally, I will share my findings regarding the distribution of kivéve and kivételével.

This is work in progress, and I hope to evoke fruitful discussion that will help me in the next steps of this study, rather than simply deliver a camera-ready talk.
